Mecamylamine + scopolamine is a combination of two small molecule anticholinergic drugs. Mecamylamine is a non-selective, non-competitive antagonist of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, while scopolamine is a competitive antagonist at muscarinic acetylcholine receptors. This combination has been studied for its effects on the central and peripheral nervous systems, particularly in modulating cholinergic neurotransmission. Research indicates that combined blockade of both muscarinic and nicotinic receptors can shift brain function from memory acquisition to consolidation, improve declarative memory consolidation during sleep-like states, and alleviate motion sickness-induced gastrointestinal symptoms through both central (vestibulo-autonomic pathways) and peripheral mechanisms[1][2]. The combination has also been explored in preclinical models for its impact on antidepressant effects when used with other cholinergic agents[5][7].
