Overview
Lipofundin MCT/LCT 20% is a sterile, oil-in-water lipid emulsion designed for intravenous infusion as part of a parenteral nutrition regimen. Developed by B. Braun, it consists of a 50/50 physical mixture of medium-chain triglycerides (MCT) and long-chain triglycerides (LCT, derived from refined soya-bean oil). This second-generation emulsion provides essential fatty acids, such as linoleic and alpha-linolenic acid, and serves as a concentrated source of caloric energy (~1900 kcal/L). It is primarily indicated for patients requiring parenteral nutrition due to critical illness or malnutrition and has been studied for its potential to reduce the incidence of nosocomial infections in ICU settings compared to pure LCT emulsions. The formulation is designed to support metabolic function by supplying fatty acids and energy substrates to patients unable to receive adequate nutrition orally or enterally.
