Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Mefenamic acid + drotaverine hydrochloride is a fixed-dose combination pharmaceutical product containing 250 mg of mefenamic acid and 80 mg of drotaverine hydrochloride. Drotaverine is an antispasmodic agent that works as a selective inhibitor of phosphodiesterase 4 (PDE4), which increases intracellular cyclic AMP levels and relaxes smooth muscle. Mefenamic acid is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that provides analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting the cyclooxygenase enzymes (COX-1 and COX-2), thereby reducing the production of prostaglandins. This combination is primarily used for the symptomatic treatment of spasmodic pain, including dysmenorrhea (menstrual cramps), biliary colic, ureteric colic, and intestinal colic. It is manufactured and marketed in India by companies such as Vintek Pharmaceuticals.
