Overview
Melatonin + alprazolam is a fixed-dose combination of two agents used primarily for the treatment of insomnia and anxiety disorders. Alprazolam is a benzodiazepine that enhances the effect of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system, resulting in anxiolytic, sedative, muscle relaxant, and amnesic effects. Melatonin is an endogenous hormone produced by the pineal gland that regulates circadian rhythms and promotes sleep onset by acting as an agonist at melatonin receptors (MT1 and MT2) in the brain. The combination has been shown to provide superior reduction in preoperative anxiety compared to either agent alone without increasing sedation or amnesia beyond what is seen with alprazolam monotherapy[2][3][4][5]. It is available as oral tablets.
