Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**Melatonin + zinc** is a combination dietary supplement composed of melatonin, a neurohormone primarily involved in the regulation of circadian rhythms and sleep, and zinc, an essential trace element with antioxidant, immunomodulatory, and enzymatic functions. This combination has primarily been investigated as an adjuvant or supportive therapy in various chronic conditions and experimental models. Independent clinical and preclinical studies indicate potential synergistic effects on reducing fatigue and improving physical quality of life in myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome, and on neuroprotection and attenuation of neurotoxicity via antioxidant and anti-inflammatory mechanisms. Preclinical studies show the combination may boost the antioxidant system (increasing glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase), reduce neuroinflammatory markers (such as TNF-α and GFAP), and modulate expression of apoptosis-related proteins (such as p53), thereby protecting against neurodegenerative and neuropathic conditions[1][2][3]. Clinical trial evidence suggests safety and benefit in improving fatigue and sleep quality, but it is primarily used as a dietary supplement and not as an approved pharmaceutical drug[3].
