Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Meloxicam + esomeprazole is a fixed-dose oral combination drug consisting of meloxicam, a long-acting nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) with preferential cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibition, and esomeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). Meloxicam provides anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antipyretic effects primarily by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis via COX enzymes. Esomeprazole reduces gastric acid secretion by irreversibly inhibiting the H+/K+ ATPase in gastric parietal cells. The rationale for this combination is to provide effective pain relief while reducing the risk of NSAID-induced gastrointestinal ulcers or other GI adverse events through gastric protection. This formulation is being developed for chronic pain conditions such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis[2][3][4].
