NeuroMend is a fixed-dose combination therapy consisting of memantine and N-acetylcysteine (NAC), originally developed by Clera Inc. for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease and other neurological disorders. Memantine acts as a low-to-moderate affinity, non-competitive NMDA receptor antagonist, which helps regulate glutamate activity and prevent excitotoxicity. N-acetylcysteine serves as a precursor to glutathione, providing antioxidant support, and modulates glutamatergic neurotransmission via the cystine-glutamate antiporter (xCT). The combination was designed to provide synergistic neuroprotective effects by addressing both excitotoxic pathways and oxidative stress, which are key drivers of neurodegeneration. Clinical development reached Phase 2 trials before being terminated.
