Drug intelligence / Profile preview
MenACWY + paracetamol-University of Oxford-COVID-19 refers to the active control arm protocol used in the University of Oxford's clinical trials for the ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 (AZD1222) COVID-19 vaccine, most notably the Phase III COV003 study. This intervention consists of a single dose of the quadrivalent meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MenACWY), specifically the brand Nimenrix manufactured by Pfizer, administered alongside prophylactic paracetamol (acetaminophen). The MenACWY vaccine targets Neisseria meningitidis serogroups A, C, W-135, and Y. Paracetamol was included in the protocol (typically 1 gram every 6 hours for the first 24 hours) to mitigate common post-vaccination systemic reactions such as fever, headache, and myalgia. This ensured that participants in the control group experienced a similar level of reactogenicity to those receiving the experimental COVID-19 vaccine, thereby maintaining the study's double-blind design.
