Drug intelligence / Profile preview
The meningococcal ACWY conjugate vaccine is an inactivated subunit (conjugate) vaccine that protects against invasive disease caused by Neisseria meningitidis serogroups A, C, W, and Y. It works by presenting polysaccharide antigens from the bacterial capsule—specifically from groups A, C, W-135 (W), and Y—conjugated to a carrier protein (such as diphtheria toxoid or CRM197). This enhances immunogenicity by stimulating a T-cell dependent immune response. The primary indication is prevention of invasive meningococcal disease including bacterial meningitis and septicemia. The vaccines are recommended for adolescents as part of routine immunization schedules and for individuals at increased risk due to medical conditions or exposure risks. Major brands include Menactra (Sanofi), Menveo (GSK; originally Novartis), and MenQuadfi (Sanofi)[3][5][8].
