Drug intelligence / Profile preview
The group A and C meningococcal conjugate vaccine is a bivalent vaccine designed to prevent invasive meningococcal disease caused by *Neisseria meningitidis* serogroups A and C. Unlike pure polysaccharide vaccines, conjugate vaccines chemically link the bacterial capsular polysaccharides to a carrier protein (such as tetanus toxoid or CRM197). This conjugation converts the T-cell independent polysaccharide antigens into T-cell dependent antigens, which induces a more robust immune response, provides longer-lasting immunity, and is effective in infants and young children under two years of age. Several Chinese biopharmaceutical companies, including Chengdu Institute of Biological Products, Chengdu Olin Biotechnology, and Luoyi (Wuxi) Biopharmaceutical, have developed or are evaluating versions of this vaccine in clinical trials to address the prevalence of these serogroups in the region.
