Overview

Bexsero (4CMenB) is a multicomponent vaccine developed by Novartis (now GSK) to prevent invasive meningococcal disease caused by Neisseria meningitidis serogroup B. It consists of three recombinant proteins—factor H binding protein (fHbp), Neisserial adhesin A (NadA), and Neisseria heparin binding antigen (NHBA)—combined with outer membrane vesicles (OMV) from the New Zealand strain NZ98/254, which provides the PorA P1.4 antigen. The vaccine is adsorbed onto aluminum hydroxide as an adjuvant. Clinical studies, such as the Phase 3 V72P13 extension trial, have evaluated the safety and immunogenicity of Bexsero when administered as a booster or catch-up dose in toddlers concomitantly with routine childhood vaccines (e.g., DTaP-IPV-Hib, PCV7, or MMRV). It works by inducing serum bactericidal antibodies against these specific surface antigens of the meningococcus.
