Overview

Meningococcal Group C conjugate vaccine (specifically Menjugate, originally developed by Chiron and later Novartis) is a vaccine indicated for the active immunization of children from 2 months of age, adolescents, and adults for the prevention of invasive disease caused by *Neisseria meningitidis* serogroup C. The vaccine consists of purified capsular oligosaccharides from the bacteria, which are chemically conjugated to the CRM197 carrier protein (a non-toxic recombinant variant of the diphtheria toxin). This conjugation converts the polysaccharide into a T-cell dependent antigen, allowing for a robust immune response and the induction of immunological memory, even in infants. The vaccine induces the production of bactericidal antibodies that provide protection against meningococcal meningitis and septicemia caused by serogroup C.
