Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Meningovax A+C is a bivalent meningococcal polysaccharide vaccine designed to provide active immunization against invasive meningococcal disease and meningitis caused by *Neisseria meningitidis* serogroups A and C. Developed by Merck & Co. in collaboration with Sanofi (formerly Aventis Pasteur) and associated with the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) in clinical studies, the vaccine contains purified capsular polysaccharides from both serogroups. It works by stimulating the host immune system to produce bactericidal antibodies against these specific surface antigens. Meningovax A+C was widely used for travel prophylaxis and outbreak control before being largely replaced by quadrivalent conjugate vaccines (such as Menveo) and is now discontinued.
