menthol + simethicone

Menthol + simethicone is a combination pharmacological intervention developed by The First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University for use during colonoscopy procedures. Menthol, a natural terpenoid derived from peppermint oil, functions as a topical antispasmodic by antagonizing L-type calcium channels in intestinal smooth muscle cells, which inhibits calcium influx and leads to muscle relaxation. Simethicone is included as an anti-foaming agent to reduce the surface tension of gas bubbles, thereby improving mucosal visibility and the adenoma detection rate. This combination is administered via endoscopic irrigation as an aqueous suspension to alleviate colonic spasms and enhance the diagnostic quality of the procedure.
