MER + bacillus calmette-guérin is a combination immunotherapy consisting of the methanol extraction residue (MER) derived from Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG), a live attenuated strain of Mycobacterium bovis. This combination has been investigated as an adjuvant immunotherapeutic agent in cancer treatment, particularly for extensive non-small-cell lung cancer and advanced Hodgkin's disease. The mechanism involves immune system stimulation; BCG acts as a biologic response modifier by activating immune cells to attack tumor cells, while the MER component is thought to enhance or modulate this immune response. However, clinical studies have shown that adding MER to standard chemotherapy or maintenance regimens did not improve outcomes and was associated with significant toxicity and poor tolerability[1][2]. The use of this specific combination is investigational and not widely adopted in current practice.
