Overview

Meropenem + plaibactam (QL1007) is an investigational fixed-dose combination antibiotic being developed by Qilu Pharmaceutical for the treatment of serious infections caused by multi-drug resistant (MDR) Gram-negative bacteria. The combination consists of meropenem, a broad-spectrum carbapenem, and plaibactam, a novel cyclic boronate beta-lactamase inhibitor. Meropenem exerts its bactericidal effect by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis through high-affinity binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs). Plaibactam is designed to inhibit a wide range of beta-lactamases, including Class A (e.g., KPC), Class B metallo-beta-lactamases (e.g., NDM, VIM), Class C (e.g., AmpC), and Class D (e.g., OXA-48) enzymes, thereby restoring the activity of meropenem against carbapenem-resistant strains. The drug is currently in Phase 3 clinical trials for indications including complicated intra-abdominal infections (cIAI), complicated urinary tract infections (cUTI), and hospital-acquired or ventilator-associated pneumonia (HAP/VAP).
