Overview

Meropenem + teicoplanin is a combination of two intravenous antibiotics used primarily for the treatment of severe or resistant bacterial infections, especially those involving both Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms. Meropenem is a broad-spectrum carbapenem antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to cell lysis and death. Teicoplanin is a glycopeptide antibiotic that also inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis, specifically by binding to the D-Ala-D-Ala terminus of peptidoglycan precursors, preventing polymerization and cross-linking. This combination has demonstrated synergistic or additive effects in vitro against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Enterococcus faecalis, making it useful in treating mixed or difficult-to-treat infections[1][2][3][5]. The use of this combination may be considered when monotherapy is insufficient due to resistance patterns or severity of infection.
