meropenem + vaborbactam

**Meropenem + vaborbactam** is a fixed-dose intravenous antibacterial combination comprising meropenem, a broad-spectrum carbapenem beta-lactam antibiotic, and vaborbactam, a cyclic boronic-acid beta-lactamase inhibitor. Meropenem inhibits bacterial penicillin-binding proteins and thereby disrupts peptidoglycan cell-wall synthesis, while vaborbactam inhibits serine beta-lactamases, particularly Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase, protecting meropenem from enzymatic hydrolysis and restoring activity against susceptible carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales. It is marketed as Vabomere in the United States and Vaborem in the European Union. U.S. approval covers adult complicated urinary tract infections, including acute pyelonephritis; European authorization also covers complicated intra-abdominal infection, hospital-acquired bacterial pneumonia, ventilator-associated bacterial pneumonia, and associated bacteremia in indicated settings. The product originated at Rempex Pharmaceuticals, subsequently passed through The Medicines Company and Melinta Therapeutics, and is currently commercialized in the United States by CorMedix.
