Overview

Mesalamine + probiotic is a combination therapy consisting of **mesalamine** (also known as mesalazine, 5-aminosalicylic acid) and a **probiotic formulation**. Mesalamine is an anti-inflammatory agent primarily used in the management of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) such as ulcerative colitis. It works by inhibiting the synthesis of inflammatory mediators including prostaglandins and leukotrienes, thus reducing colonic inflammation. Probiotics are live microorganisms that confer health benefits by restoring or maintaining healthy gut flora, enhancing mucosal barrier function, inhibiting the growth of pathogenic bacteria, modulating the immune response (including the promotion of regulatory T cells), and reducing intestinal permeability and inflammation. The combination is used in clinical settings—especially for ulcerative colitis and IBD—to enhance therapeutic efficacy by addressing both inflammation (via mesalamine) and gut dysbiosis/immune dysregulation (via probiotics). Clinical evidence demonstrates that this combination improves clinical, endoscopic, and immune parameters with an acceptable safety profile[1][2][3].
