Overview
Mesalazine + hydrocortisone sodium succinate is an investigational combination enema formulation being evaluated for the treatment of active ulcerative colitis (UC). The combination consists of 4g of mesalazine (also known as 5-aminosalicylic acid or 5-ASA) and 100mg of hydrocortisone sodium succinate. Mesalazine acts as a local anti-inflammatory agent in the colonic mucosa by inhibiting cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase pathways and activating PPAR-gamma receptors. Hydrocortisone sodium succinate is a corticosteroid that provides potent anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects by binding to the glucocorticoid receptor. This combination is primarily studied for its ability to induce clinical remission and mucosal healing in patients with active UC flares.
