Overview

Mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) transplantation is an experimental cell therapy being investigated by Assiut University for the treatment of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). DMD is a progressive genetic muscle-wasting disorder caused by the absence of the protein dystrophin. MSCs are multipotent stromal cells that possess significant immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties, and they have the potential to differentiate into various cell types, including myogenic lineages. In clinical trials conducted at Assiut University Children Hospital, these cells are administered via intramuscular injection to evaluate their ability to reduce muscle inflammation, promote tissue repair, and slow the progression of both skeletal muscle disability and cardiomyopathy in affected boys.
