This investigational cell-based therapy, developed by Fuzhou General Hospital, utilizes expanded autologous bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) for the treatment of chronic allograft nephropathy (CAN) in kidney transplant recipients. MSCs are multipotent, undifferentiated cells characterized by significant immunomodulatory and tissue-repair properties. In the context of CAN, these cells are administered via intravenous infusion to patients with biopsy-confirmed Banff I-II rejection. The therapy functions through complex mechanisms, including the inhibition of T-cell and B-cell proliferation, modulation of dendritic cell maturation, and the secretion of paracrine factors that promote a pro-tolerogenic environment and stimulate endogenous repair processes within the renal graft. This academic clinical program aims to evaluate whether MSC transplantation can effectively prevent organ rejection and maintain long-term kidney function.
