Mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) therapy developed by Beijing 302 Hospital (also known as the Fifth Medical Center of Chinese PLA General Hospital) for the treatment of COVID-19 pneumonia. These multipotent cells are administered intravenously and possess significant immunomodulatory properties, allowing them to reduce pro-inflammatory cytokine production and enhance lung tissue repair. The cells used in this therapy are specifically noted to be ACE2-negative and TMPRSS2-negative, which makes them resistant to direct infection by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Clinical investigations have shown that these MSCs accumulate in the lungs following infusion, where they improve the pulmonary microenvironment, protect alveolar epithelial cells, and potentially prevent the development of pulmonary fibrosis in patients with severe respiratory distress.
