Overview

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are being investigated by The Foundation for Spinal Research, Education and Humanitarian Care, Inc. as a regenerative treatment for chronic low back pain. In a prospective cohort study (NCT02332798), the foundation compared the efficacy of autograft (patient-derived bone marrow concentrate) and allograft mesenchymal stem cell injections. The primary indications are lumbar degenerative disc disease and degenerative facet joint disease. MSCs are multipotent cells that exert therapeutic effects through paracrine signaling, releasing anti-inflammatory cytokines and growth factors that modulate the local immune environment and potentially stimulate the repair of damaged disc and facet joint tissues. The treatment involves the direct injection of these cells into the affected spinal structures to reduce pain and improve functional outcomes in patients who have failed conservative management.
