Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are a type of multipotent cell therapy being developed and evaluated by Fujian Medical University for the treatment of steroid-resistant severe acute graft-versus-host disease (aGVHD). These cells are characterized by their significant immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties. In the context of aGVHD, which is a life-threatening complication of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, MSCs are utilized to suppress the donor T-cell-mediated attack on host tissues. They function by secreting various cytokines and factors that inhibit the proliferation of alloreactive T-cells and promote the induction of regulatory T-cells, thereby restoring immune homeostasis. This specific therapeutic approach is being investigated in Phase 2/3 clinical trials to provide a rescue therapy for patients who do not respond to standard corticosteroid treatment.
