Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) developed by the Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Medicas y Nutricion Salvador Zubiran (INCMNSZ) are an allogenic cell therapy investigated for the treatment of severe COVID-19-induced acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). These cells possess potent immunomodulatory properties, allowing them to regulate the 'cytokine storm'—a hyperinflammatory state characterized by the uncontrolled release of pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines that leads to systemic inflammation and multi-organ failure. By modulating the immune response and promoting a pro-resolution environment, MSCs aim to improve lung function, as measured by the PaO2/FiO2 ratio, and reduce mortality in patients with bilateral pneumonia. The therapy is administered as a single intravenous infusion of bank-derived allogenic MSCs at a dose of 1 million cells per kilogram.
