Overview

This investigational cell therapy, developed by the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh, India, utilizes bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) for immunomodulation in patients undergoing living-related kidney transplantation. The therapy involves the infusion of either autologous or allogeneic (donor-derived) MSCs to prevent renal transplant rejection. These cells function by interfering with the signaling and proliferation of key immune cells, including T cells, B cells, and dendritic cells, thereby promoting a state of immune tolerance and potentially reducing the requirement for long-term pharmacological immunosuppression. The program is currently being evaluated in Phase 1 clinical trials to assess safety and the effect on the immune repertoire in a donor-specific response.
