Mesenchymal stem cells (Royan Institute) is an investigational cell therapy consisting of culture-expanded, bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs). Developed by the Royan Institute in Iran, this therapy is administered via intra-articular injection for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis. The mechanism of action involves the potential for MSCs to differentiate into chondrocytes to resurface articular cartilage and the secretion of various bioactive molecules that modulate the immune system and reduce inflammation (paracrine effect). Clinical trials, including the ACRCT and RIMRO studies, have evaluated its safety and efficacy in improving clinical manifestations and joint function in patients with severe knee osteoarthritis, including those with comorbid rheumatoid arthritis.
