Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are a cell-based therapy being developed by Stem Cell and Cancer Research Indonesia (SCCR Indonesia) for the treatment of liver fibrosis. These multipotent cells function through immunomodulation and the paracrine secretion of trophic factors to alter the fibrotic microenvironment. Specifically, the therapy aims to suppress the production of Transforming Growth Factor-beta (TGF-beta) and decrease the expression of alpha-smooth muscle actin (alpha-SMA), which are key drivers of hepatic stellate cell activation and collagen deposition. Preclinical research conducted by SCCR Indonesia, an organization affiliated with Sultan Agung Islamic University and holding cGMP certification, has demonstrated that MSC treatment can ameliorate liver fibrosis and promote tissue repair in animal models.
