Overview

This investigational cell-based therapy consists of allogenic bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) being developed by the VA Office of Research and Development for the treatment of age-related frailty in Veterans. Mesenchymal stem cells are multipotent, undifferentiated cells capable of self-renewal and differentiation into various cell lineages. The therapeutic approach utilizes the ability of MSCs to home to sites of tissue injury and inflammation in response to signaling from damaged cells. Once localized, the MSCs exert their effects through paracrine signaling, releasing a variety of growth factors and immune modulators that promote tissue repair, reduce systemic inflammation, and address the stem cell depletion associated with the aging process. The therapy is currently being evaluated in a Phase 1/2 pilot trial to assess its safety, feasibility, and efficacy in improving functional independence in older Veterans.
