Overview

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) derived from Wharton’s jelly (the gelatinous connective tissue within the umbilical cord) are a cell-based therapy with potent immunomodulatory, regenerative, and anti-inflammatory properties. Wharton’s jelly MSCs are characterized by their high proliferative potential, immuno-privileged status, and multipotency (ability to differentiate into osteocytes, chondrocytes, adipocytes, etc.), making them promising for use in regenerative medicine and the treatment of various diseases. Their mechanisms of action are primarily paracrine—mediated by secretion of cytokines, growth factors, and extracellular vesicles that modulate immune responses, reduce inflammation, promote tissue repair, and maintain cellular homeostasis. WJ-MSCs are being investigated in clinical trials for a range of indications, including graft-versus-host disease, myocardial infarction, ischemic cardiomyopathy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, erectile dysfunction, chronic spinal cord injury, knee osteoarthrosis, diabetic foot ulcers, and metabolic syndrome. Multiple academic and commercial entities are involved in their development and manufacturing, with intrathecal, intravenous, and intraarticular routes of administration tested in humans[1][2][3][4][5].
