Overview

This combination therapy involves the co-administration of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) for the treatment of refractory tendinopathy. MSCs are multipotent cells that possess immunomodulatory and regenerative properties, capable of differentiating into tenocytes to repair damaged tendon tissue. PRP is an autologous concentrate of platelets that, upon activation, releases a high concentration of growth factors, including platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). In this therapeutic approach, PRP acts as both a bioactive scaffold and a source of cytokines that stimulate the survival, proliferation, and tenogenic differentiation of the MSCs. The First Affiliated Hospital of Third Military Medical University has investigated this synergistic combination to enhance healing in chronic tendon injuries that have failed to respond to conventional treatments.
