Overview

Mesenchymal stem cells derived from Wharton's jelly (WJ-MSCs) are allogeneic, multipotent stromal cells harvested from the umbilical cord matrix. This specific cell therapy product, developed by the Universidad de la Sabana, is being evaluated for its therapeutic potential in patients with diffuse cutaneous systemic sclerosis (SSc) who exhibit refractory pulmonary involvement, such as pulmonary hypertension. WJ-MSCs are known for their potent immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties, which they exert by secreting paracrine factors (including cytokines and growth factors) and through direct cell-to-cell contact with immune cells. These actions help to suppress aberrant immune responses and reduce fibrotic progression in the lungs and skin. The therapy is administered via intravenous infusion as a potential alternative for patients who have not responded to conventional treatments like methotrexate or cyclophosphamide.
