Overview

Mesenchymal stromal cell-derived extracellular vesicles (MSC-EVs) are an investigational exosome-based therapy being developed by the D'Or Institute for Research and Education (IDOR). These extracellular vesicles are nano-sized, membrane-bound particles secreted by mesenchymal stromal cells that carry a cargo of bioactive proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids. In the context of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), MSC-EVs are designed to modulate the pulmonary and systemic inflammatory response, reduce the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines (mitigating the "cytokine storm"), and promote the repair of alveolar epithelial and endothelial barriers. The therapy is administered intravenously and is currently being evaluated in Phase I/II clinical trials for patients with moderate to severe ARDS, including cases associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection.
