Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) are an investigational multipotent cell therapy being developed by Assistance Publique - Hôpitaux de Paris (AP-HP) for the treatment of Pelvic Radiation Disease (PRD). PRD encompasses severe and chronic radiotherapy-induced abdomino-pelvic complications, such as radiation-induced cystitis and proctopathy, which are often refractory to standard treatments. The therapy involves the systemic intravenous administration of MSCs, which are produced through the ECellFrance platform. These cells function by migrating to sites of radiation-induced tissue damage, where they exert immunomodulatory and regenerative effects. By secreting a variety of paracrine factors, MSCs help to suppress chronic inflammation, promote angiogenesis, and stimulate tissue repair, thereby reducing symptoms such as pain, hemorrhage, and diarrhea. The efficacy and safety of this approach are currently being evaluated in the Phase II PRISME clinical trial.
