Overview
Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) are multipotent progenitor cells being investigated by Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital for the treatment of chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGvHD). These cells possess significant immunomodulatory properties, capable of suppressing the activation and proliferation of various immune cells, including T-cells, B-cells, and natural killer cells, while promoting the expansion of regulatory T-cells. In clinical trials, these MSCs are administered intravenously as an adjunct to standard immunosuppressive regimens (such as prednisone and calcineurin inhibitors) to improve response rates and outcomes in patients with newly diagnosed or steroid-refractory cGvHD. The therapy is currently being evaluated in a Phase 3 randomized study in Southern China.
