Overview

Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) developed by Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) are an investigational cell-based therapy derived from bone marrow, utilized in both autologous and allogeneic formats. These cells are being evaluated for their ability to prevent or treat allograft rejection and interstitial fibrosis/tubular atrophy in kidney transplant recipients. MSCs function through potent immunomodulatory effects, including the inhibition of T-cell and B-cell activation and the induction of regulatory T cells, alongside regenerative properties that mitigate tissue fibrosis. Clinical studies at LUMC have focused on the safety and feasibility of intravenous infusions of these cells post-transplantation to improve long-term graft survival and reduce the reliance on traditional immunosuppressive regimens.
