Overview

Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) developed by the University of Liege (University Hospital CHU of Liège) are an investigational cell-based therapy for the treatment of refractory Crohn's disease. These multipotent adult stem cells are isolated from bone marrow and expanded in vitro at the Laboratory of Cell and Gene Therapy. The therapy is administered via local injection into intestinal or perianal lesions, including strictures. MSCs exert their therapeutic effect through immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and anti-fibrotic properties, aiming to promote tissue healing and mucosal recovery in patients who have failed conventional treatments. The treatment is currently being evaluated in Phase 1/2 clinical trials to assess safety and efficacy in healing refractory lesions.
