Overview

Metformin (Geropharm) is a generic formulation of metformin hydrochloride developed by the Russian pharmaceutical company Geropharm for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. As a biguanide antihyperglycemic agent, it works by decreasing hepatic glucose production, decreasing intestinal absorption of glucose, and improving insulin sensitivity by increasing peripheral glucose uptake and utilization. Geropharm has developed both immediate-release (1000 mg) and extended-release (750 mg) versions, which have been evaluated in bioequivalence studies against the reference brand Glucophage. It is intended to provide equivalent therapeutic effects to the originator brand in managing blood glucose levels in patients with type 2 diabetes.
