This combination therapy involves the co-administration of metformin, a biguanide antihyperglycemic agent, and agave inulin, a prebiotic fiber derived from the agave plant. Developed by researchers at the Centro Universitario de Ciencias de la Salud in Mexico, the combination is being evaluated in Phase 3 clinical trials for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men who also present with metabolic syndrome. Metformin's primary mechanism involves the activation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), leading to improved insulin sensitivity and reduced systemic insulin levels, which are thought to drive prostate enlargement. Agave inulin complements this by acting as a prebiotic to modulate the gut microbiome and further improve metabolic parameters such as lipid profiles and glucose control.
