Overview
This combination therapy, investigated by the Iuliu Hatieganu University of Medicine and Pharmacy, consists of the insulin sensitizer metformin (1700 mg daily), an oral contraceptive containing ethinylestradiol (30 μg) and drospirenone (3 mg), and a weight loss intervention via dietary changes. It is specifically designed to treat young women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). The regimen aims to address the multifaceted nature of PCOS by improving insulin sensitivity, reducing hyperandrogenism, and mitigating cardiovascular risk factors such as endothelial dysfunction and elevated high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) levels. Clinical study results indicated improvements in flow-mediated dilatation, body composition, and metabolic parameters over a 6-month period.
