Overview

Metformin + mitiglinide is a combination therapy consisting of the biguanide metformin and the meglitinide derivative mitiglinide. Metformin primarily works by decreasing hepatic glucose production and improving peripheral insulin sensitivity through the activation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK). Mitiglinide is a rapid-acting insulin secretagogue that stimulates insulin release from pancreatic beta cells by closing ATP-sensitive potassium (KATP) channels. This combination is being evaluated by the Third Affiliated Hospital of Third Military Medical University in the BLOOD Study to assess its effects on blood pressure and lipid metabolism in overweight or obese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and masked hypertension.
