Overview

The combination of metformin and montelukast has been studied for its potential therapeutic benefits, particularly in treating type 2 diabetes mellitus with obesity. According to clinical research, this combination therapy has shown promising results in improving glycemic control and promoting weight loss. Montelukast, when used as an adjuvant therapy alongside metformin, has demonstrated superior efficacy compared to metformin-only therapy in diabetes control and weight loss[1]. This enhanced effectiveness is attributed to montelukast's ability to increase insulin sensitivity and its anti-inflammatory properties[1]. In a clinical trial, the combination therapy showed significant improvements in various parameters including BMI, HbA1c, HOMA-IR, and inflammatory markers compared to metformin alone[1]. The percentage changes observed in the montelukast group were notably better than the placebo group: - BMI reduction: 8% vs 5% - HbA1c reduction: 16% vs 9% - HOMA-IR improvement: 58% vs 41% - Inflammatory markers improvement: 50-70% vs 5-30%[1] Beyond diabetes management, the combination of metformin and montelukast, particularly when used with Lactobacillus, has shown potential in reversing testicular and liver damage caused by streptozotocin in diabetic male rats[3]. This combination significantly reduced oxidative, inflammatory, and apoptotic activities induced by streptozotocin[3].
