Overview

Metformin + NPH insulin is a combination therapy used primarily in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Metformin is an oral antihyperglycemic agent that acts as an insulin sensitizer, reducing hepatic glucose production and improving peripheral glucose uptake. NPH (Neutral Protamine Hagedorn) insulin is an intermediate-acting human insulin formulation that provides basal glycemic control by facilitating cellular uptake of glucose and inhibiting hepatic glucose output. The combination targets both fasting and postprandial blood glucose levels, offering improved glycemic control compared to monotherapy with either agent alone. This regimen can reduce weight gain associated with insulin therapy and lower the risk of hypoglycemia compared to some other regimens[2][3][5]. It is typically used when oral agents alone are insufficient for glycemic control.
