metformin + semaglutide

This is an investigational combination therapy consisting of metformin, a small molecule biguanide insulin sensitizer, and semaglutide, a glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1 RA). It is being evaluated in a Phase II randomized controlled trial led by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The therapy aims to improve metabolic and reproductive outcomes in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and obesity. Semaglutide works by stimulating glucose-dependent insulin secretion and promoting satiety, while metformin reduces hepatic glucose production and improves peripheral insulin sensitivity. The trial specifically utilizes locally available semaglutide formulations in Bangladesh at reduced dosages to assess their efficacy in managing the metabolic manifestations of PCOS.
