Overview

Alsita-M is a fixed-dose combination of the biguanide metformin and the dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor sitagliptin. It is developed and marketed by Alkem Laboratories and Indus Life Sciences for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Metformin works by decreasing hepatic glucose production, decreasing intestinal absorption of glucose, and improving insulin sensitivity by increasing peripheral glucose uptake and utilization. Sitagliptin works by inhibiting the DPP-4 enzyme, which slows the inactivation of incretin hormones (such as GLP-1 and GIP), thereby increasing insulin release and decreasing glucagon secretion in a glucose-dependent manner. Together, these complementary mechanisms provide glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes.
