Overview
Metformin + sulphonylurea is a combination therapy used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus. It combines two different mechanisms of action to control blood glucose levels. Metformin (a biguanide) decreases glucose production in the liver, slows intestinal absorption of glucose, and improves insulin sensitivity. Sulphonylureas (such as glipizide or glyburide) stimulate the pancreas to release more insulin. This combination is typically prescribed when diet, exercise, and monotherapy with either agent alone fail to achieve adequate glycemic control.
