Overview

Methenamine (marketed under the brand name Antihydral) is a topical antiperspirant used for the treatment of excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), particularly of the hands, feet, and underarms. Developed by Robugen GmbH & Co. KG, the drug functions as a prodrug that releases formaldehyde upon contact with acidic sweat. The released formaldehyde acts by denaturing proteins at the openings of the sweat gland ducts, effectively creating a physical plug that reduces perspiration. It is an established, approved product available in various topical formulations including ointments, creams, and sprays, and has been used for decades in European markets.
