Overview

Methohexital + succinylcholine is a combination of two drugs commonly used in anesthesia for procedures such as electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). Methohexital is an ultra-short-acting barbiturate that acts as a general anesthetic by enhancing the inhibitory effects of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) at the GABA-A receptor, leading to central nervous system depression and induction of anesthesia. Succinylcholine is a depolarizing neuromuscular blocker that acts as an agonist at nicotinic acetylcholine receptors on the motor endplate, causing sustained depolarization and subsequent skeletal muscle paralysis. This combination provides rapid induction of unconsciousness (via methohexital) and short-term muscle relaxation/paralysis (via succinylcholine), making it particularly useful for brief procedures like ECT where both quick onset and offset are desired[1][2][3][4].
