The induction chemotherapy regimen developed by St. Jude Children's Research Hospital for the SJYC07 clinical trial is a multi-agent intensive treatment designed for young children (typically under 3 or 5 years of age) with newly diagnosed embryonal and other central nervous system (CNS) tumors. This regimen aims to provide robust systemic control of the disease while delaying or reducing the need for craniospinal irradiation, which can cause significant neurocognitive deficits in very young patients. The standard induction phase consists of four cycles of high-dose methotrexate, vincristine, cisplatin, and cyclophosphamide. For patients classified as high-risk, vinblastine is added to each cycle to further intensify the treatment. This induction phase is part of a risk-adapted strategy that categorizes patients into low, intermediate, or high-risk groups to determine subsequent consolidation and maintenance therapies.
